    I am Mr. Langat Geoffrey, your trainer for this course. It is a pleasure to have you on board as we explore the fascinating world of crop production ,the foundation of successful agriculture and food security.

    In this unit, you will gain practical knowledge and hands-on skills essential for efficient and sustainable crop production. Together, we will learn how to:

    • Use personal protective equipment (PPE) safely in agricultural operations.

    • Identify and operate land preparation tools and equipment for clearing, tillage, and soil management.

    • Prepare the land through primary, secondary, and tertiary cultivation.

    • Identify and prepare different planting materials, including both seeds and vegetative parts such as cuttings, tubers, and suckers.

    • Practice various planting methods suitable for different crops and environmental conditions.

    • Manage crops through routine practices like irrigation, weeding, pest and disease control, staking, fertilizer application, mulching, and thinning.

    • Finally, apply appropriate harvesting techniques such as picking, cutting, digging, and uprooting.

    By the end of this unit, you will not only understand the principles of crop production but also be able to apply them effectively in real-life agricultural settings.

By the end of this unit, the learner should be able to:

  1. Explain the importance and use of personal protective equipment (PPE) in agricultural operations, identifying different types such as overalls, headgear, gloves, gumboots, and goggles.

  2. Identify and correctly use land preparation tools and equipment, including:

    • Land clearing tools (e.g., machetes, slashers, axes)

    • Tillage tools (e.g., hoes, ploughs, harrows)

  3. Describe and carry out land preparation practices, including:

    • Land clearing

    • Primary, secondary, and tertiary cultivation

  4. Identify and prepare various planting materials, including seeds and vegetative materials (e.g., cuttings, tubers, suckers).

  5. Demonstrate different planting methods suitable for various crops and conditions.

  6. Carry out crop routine management practices such as:

    • Irrigation

    • Pest and disease control

    • Weeding

    • Staking, de-suckering, fertilizer application, trellising, mulching, gapping, and thinning

  7. Apply appropriate crop harvesting methods, including:

    • Picking
